Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m not good enough”? 😞 Yep. Me too.
Most of us, at some point, have had that little crazy horse of a thought sneak in and rain on our parade. It’s that heavy, grey cloud that sits over your confidence. Quiet, but powerful.
And if you let it make a home in your head, it can hold you hostage. Seriously.
You stop showing up. You start second-guessing yourself. You pull back from the very things that could move your life forward. Actuals.
But here’s the good news, kind of:
That voice is not in charge. It's not the boss of you. Nope. Not the manager. Not the one calling the shots.
It just acts like it knows better. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
And while it won’t disappear on its own, you can shut it down. With a coffee and some learned mental discipline.
So let me share what you need to know to push that "not good enough" rubbish out the gate.
1. Dodgy beliefs are liars. Harsh, but true.
Maybe you’ve told yourself, “I can’t do this as well as so-and-so,” and if so, just take a breath. And take a hard pass, because it’s flat-out untrue.
Here’s what I've learned: You have something no one else has. Yep. Your story. Your lived experience. Your own gold.
Even if you’ve messed up.
Even if you don’t have the title, the followers, or the fancy letters after your name.
Even if you’re still figuring it out as you go.
Because guess what? Most people are. (Sign of relief).
So next time that old tape starts playing, change the playlist. Maybe try this instead:
“I do things differently, and that’s my edge.”
2. Positive beliefs are your daily vitamins. Swallow them whole.
And no, positive self-talk isn’t fluffy mumbo-jumbo. It’s science-backed, brain-training, body-filling goodness. Even if it feels a bit fake at first.
Even if part of you rolls your eyes and thinks, “This is so cringey.”
Even if a louder voice in your head says, “This won’t change anything.”
You could start with something simple like:
“I’m capable and resilient.”
Say it like you mean it, out loud, with a bit of weight behind it. Daily.
Yep, you'll feel silly at first. That’s normal. Do it anyway. You'll slowly notice the shift.
Because you’re not telling fibs to yourself, you’re reminding yourself of who you really are (under all that self-doubt.)
Yep, really.
3. Your self-talk sets the tone. So, make it good.
If you’re constantly telling yourself you’re not good enough, you know what? You start believing it.
Even if you think, “But I’m just being realistic.” Nope, you’re reinforcing a story that doesn’t serve you.
Even if it feels true, it doesn’t mean it is true. Feelings aren’t facts.
Instead, you could try this:
“I’m a work in progress, and that’s okay.”
Bit by bit, you build yourself up. Not perfect, just honest.
You’ll start seeing your setbacks not as proof you’re failing, but as stepping stones. Even if the steps are tiny.
That’s how transformation actually happens. Not in giant leaps, but in gritty, consistent steps forward.
4. A growth mindset is good for us. It's like the confidence gym.
Confidence isn’t something that just happens. It’s a muscle.
And like all muscles, it grows when you work it.
Even if you think, “But I’m just not that kind of person,” that’s the fixed mindset talking. You don’t have to be that person yet, you become her.
Even if it’s awkward and slow and messy at first, that’s how everyone starts.
You could maybe try swapping “I can’t” for “I’m still learning.”
Let yourself be a beginner. A learner. Get things wrong. Have a laugh at yourself. Then, try again.
The more you stretch, the stronger you get. Be okay at failing. Just do it quickly. Learn from it. And try again.
Cause that’s how real confidence is built, not in being perfect, but in keeping on going. Kiwi's are good at that.
5. Find your people. The right ones.
You don’t need a stadium of supporters. Just a few ride-or-die humans who remind you of your strength when you forget. They're out there.
Even if part of you whispers, “I don’t want to be a burden,” or “I should be able to handle this alone," that’s just isolation talking. Not truth.
Even if you've been let down before, it doesn’t mean everyone will.
You want the kind who say, “You’ve got this,” and mean it.
The kind who lift you up, not bring you down.
These people are rockstars. When you find them, keep them close. Buy them muffins and coffee. Absorb their goodness.
That’s how you build emotional armour, not alone, but together.
Real Talk: Katya’s Story
Katya came to New Zealand as a migrant worker. Lovely woman. A heart of gold. But full of self-doubt, especially around putting her family first.
She joined our Brilliant Women Leaders programme feeling small and unsure.
Fast forward a few months: she’s walking into job interviews with her chin up, getting offers, and saying, “I’m ready for the next big thing, Kim.” By the way, she got two great job offers in one week. Not bad, eh?
She told me, “Taking the first step might be scary, but change is possible when you work hard to build that confidence.”
Too right, Katya.
So, here's your reminders:
1. Kick those limiting beliefs to the kerb.
2. Talk to yourself like someone you love.
3. Let yourself learn, stretch, and grow.
4. Be okay with failing, just do it quickly.
5. And surround yourself with the right people.
You’re not behind. You’re just warming up.
If Katya can do it, you can too.
Because life’s too short to stay stuck.
And you’re too brilliant to believe you’re not good enough.
If you’d like a hand, we're here to help. ❤️
