Ever catch yourself thinking, “I can’t do that”, or “I’m not good enough”?
Yep, that old voice again. The one that whispers just as you’re about to step up, take the mic, or go for that next-level role.
Let me introduce you (or reintroduce you) to the Survival Self.
She means well. But she’s a bit of a killjoy.
What is the Survival Self?
She’s that part of us that tries to keep us safe… but ends up keeping us stuck.
She’ll say things like:
🗣 “You’re not ready.”
🗣 “What if they find out you’re a fraud?”
🗣 “Better not risk it. Stay where it’s comfy.”
And look, if we’re being devil’s advocate for a sec, she’s not wrong.
Sometimes it is easier to stay where it’s warm, predictable, and low-stakes.
But let’s be honest, easy doesn’t build legacy. Or careers. Or confidence.
So What’s the Solution?
We’ve got to recognise the Survival Self when she pipes up…
… and lovingly tell her to take a seat.
Because the longer we let fear and doubt steer the ship, the more we delay the life we actually want.
We don’t grow by waiting until we’re 100% sure.
We grow by taking action despite the butterflies.
Here’s What That Looks Like:
👣 You apply for the leadership role even though you don’t tick every box.
🎤 You speak up in the meeting even though your voice shakes.
💥 You say yes to something that excites and terrifies you in equal measure.
That’s where the real growth is. Not in being perfect, but in being brave.
But Let’s Be Real…
Is it easy? Nope.
Comfort zones are called “comfort” zones for a reason.
But staying stuck? That has a cost too, missed chances, regrets, unrealised potential.
So, we get to choose:
🔸 Comfort now?
🔸 Or confidence later?
Meet Toni
Toni’s one of my clients. She once believed she had zero confidence. Kept telling herself she wasn’t good enough. The past had knocked her down, and it stuck.
Then she did something brave.
She showed up. She did the work. She got support.
And little by little, she started seeing herself differently. She stopped letting the past write the script. She stepped into leadership, authentically. No fakery. No mask.
And boom, she landed a dream leadership role.
So What Can We Learn From This?
That your past doesn’t get the final say.
Your fears don’t get to run the show.
And your survival self? She doesn’t get to hold the mic anymore.
Every single one of us has what it takes to rewrite the story, and lead boldly.
