When Work Smacks You in the Face and Steals Your Lunch

Are You Facing a Major Challenge in Your Career?

Is it a biggie? A bit grim? Feel like it’s smacking you sideways and stealing your snacks?

Yep, we’ve all been there.

Career curveballs never arrive with polite notices and soft landings.

One minute you’re cruising along taking it all in your stride, next minute, baaam!

Restructure. Conflict. Workload mountain. Or some awkward drama in the lunchroom.

But here’s the good-ish news:

You don’t have to have it all together.

You just need a secret weapon.

And that weapon is resilience.

It’s that inner grit that lets you roll with the punches, stay upright in the storm, and still find your car keys when everything’s gone pear-shaped.

Aka taking it in your stride (as my nana would say. (Now, she was a trooper. Raised two boys alone, while working in the city, before the dole days.)

In a world where your inbox breeds overnight and workplace change is the new normal, resilience is your “yeah-nah, I’ve got this” vibe.

1. Bounce-Back-Ability

Resilience doesn’t mean dodging the hits like Neo in The Matrix. (Seriously, no one can jump like that in heels, and in their 40's).

It means getting knocked down, eating some emergency chocolate, and still showing up the next day in your power blazer.

It says: “This sucks. But it’s not the end.”

And maybe you're asking "but isn’t showing up when you're struggling just masking the problem?”

Perhaps. There’s a fine line between resilience and denial.

But true bounce-back-ability isn’t pretending things are fine, it’s knowing things aren’t fine and choosing to move anyway.

With honesty. With support. And ideally, with snacks.

2. Confidence in Chaos

Resilience doesn’t just help you survive chaos.

It helps you own the chaos, and maybe even make it look good.

You become the calm in the storm. The “she’s got this” kind of woman.

Not because life’s easy, but because you’ve handled the hard bits before, and you’ve learned that one bad day, meeting, or restructure doesn’t get the final word.

And maybe you're saying to yourself:

“But what if I’m faking it? I don’t feel calm inside.”

Here’s the secret: most people don’t.

Resilience isn’t about feeling confident all the time.

It’s about acting with intention anyway, especially when your stomach’s doing backflips. That’s real courage.

You start realising:

• That meeting didn’t kill you.
• That restructure didn’t define you.
• That boss’s tanty wasn’t your fault.

Every time you strongarm a mess without losing your marbles, your self-belief muscles bulk up.

You become harder to rattle, and that, my friend, is gold.

3. Failing Forward

Here’s what I nkow: If you’ve never failed at work, you’re probably not stretching far enough.

The best leaders have face-planted more than most people have dared to try.

But instead of staying down, they get up, dust themselves off, and ask, “Right, what can I learn here?”

Resilience changes failure into learning. It turns red faces into redirections.

Fall. Learn. Get up. Repeat. That’s the real growth loop.

And hey, better a facepalm today than a major regret tomorrow.

4. Adapting Like a Ninja

Change is awkward. New systems. New manager. New acronyms (do we really need another CMS?).

It’s uncomfortable. It’s messy.

But resilient women? They stay flexible, creative, and (mostly) sane.

They get knocked down and pivot with style (even if they’re sobbing behind sunglasses at Pak’nSave).

And maybe, you're mumbling to yourself:

“But I hate change. I’m exhausted.”

Totally fair. Adaptation doesn’t mean you have to love it.

It just means you’re willing to move through it, at your pace, on your terms.

You can cry, swear, journal, rest… and still adapt. The ninja move is doing it your way.

☕ In a Nutshell

Building resilience doesn’t mean turning into a cold, emotionless robot. It means:

💪🏼Owning your reactions, not burying them.

💪🏼Learning from what went wrong, not hiding it.

💪🏼Showing up again, even if yesterday was an absolute rubbish fire.

Life’s challenges are like 80s hairstyles, temporary, excessive, and oddly character-building.

So:

Chin up. Shoulders back. Snacks in hand.

Because you weren’t built to break.

You were built to slay.
